Description of a Cocktail Server
The work of a cocktail server is varied due to its infancy and the broadness of the beer and brewing industry. Typically, people who qualify through one of the accreditation schemes work in the hospitality industry and are responsible for choosing and purchasing drinks.
They also oversee its correct storage and service, attend to customers, and educate staff. Cocktail servers may take tours and tastings in the brewing industry and be sales representatives.
In the retail industry, they may be in charge of buying and selecting drinks available for purchase. Self-employed cocktail sommeliers may undertake various jobs, including pub and restaurant consulting and staff training, beer writing, hosting tasting events, and cocktail judging for competitions at festivals and in print for cocktail reviews.
Several private organizations offer courses and certification for individuals as cocktail servers, not always using this term but one of their creations. The Guild of Beer Sommeliers is a membership organization for qualified beer sommeliers, recognizing the many certifications available.
One of the most significant certifications is the Cicerone program, a Craft Beer Institute registered trademark. However, the term has also been used generically.
What are the Skills of a Cocktail Server?
Communication
A cocktail server regularly communicates with several people, including other brewers, employees, personnel from production and packing, vendors, and customers. Communication is vital when expressing the needs of your brewery and delegating tasks.
On the customer side, you’ll often interact with customers in various settings, such as the taproom, conferences, competitions, festivals, and special tastings. They may ask you to share the story about your brewery and describe the specifics of your product.
Building and maintaining relationships with customers and vendors is crucial to every brewery’s success.
Proficiency in Handling Technological Tools
Technology continues to play an essential role in the business side of the food and beverage industry. More breweries are integrating technology, including various tools and systems, to optimize and streamline production.
Experience with various technologies on your resume can help you stand out when applying for jobs and make you more valuable to prospective employers.
Attention to Detail
The brewing process requires great attention and precision concerning recipe measurements and optimal brewing conditions. The math and science components involved in the brewing process impact how ingredients work with and affect one another.
Therefore, it’s essential to keep track of each step you take. Strictly adhering to protocols and standards of practice, especially when working with bacteria, is vital in ensuring the quality and safety of your product.
Managing supplies, tracking inventory, accounting, and managing employees requires strong attention to detail.
Problem-solving
Crafting cocktails requires complex methodologies and a systematic approach to balance the mix of biology, chemistry, and engineering involved in the process. Problems can arise with any tools and equipment, including fermenters, beer tanks, and conditioning tanks.
Troubleshooting ensures operations stay on track and preserve your product’s quality. Problem-solving abilities can also be helpful when modifying cocktail recipes.
Creativity
Many aspects of a cocktail server job require a certain level of creativity. Developing unique cocktail recipes that stand out amongst competitors involves innovative approaches to your product.
For instance, some cocktail mixers create drinks with flavors inspired by the seasons or their favorite dishes or combine unexpected flavor pairings.
Growing your business also entails creativity, especially when branding your cocktail or company and creating a marketing strategy to expand your reach and establish your name within the industry.
